HOW YOU CAN HELP

EMPOWERMENT.  The Stanley Jones Clean Slate Project (SJCSP) is designed around an empowerment model: ex-offenders working to make a difference in their communities in the spirit of Stanley Jones.

CORI.  The SJCSP focuses on the Criminal Offender  Record Information (CORI) law due to its devastating impact on the lives of individuals and the community.  The CORI law makes obtaining employment and housing nearly impossible for many ex-offenders and their families. While it is clear that there are valid public safety concerns to consider, the broad application of the CORI law is counterproductive and economically unsound.

REFORM.  The SJCSP’s approach balances the need for public safety with the needs of individuals to earn a living and obtain housing.  By examining the CORI restrictions and assisting ex-offenders in their transition back into the community, the SJCSP hopes to work to improve the present circumstances of ex-offenders while exploring opportunities for reform in the future.

PROJECT GOALS

§        To explore the history and use of the CORI law in Massachusetts, including the law itself and its application;

§        To educate lawmakers and the public on the implications and effects of the CORI law; and

§        To collaborate with service providers and community members to improve services for ex-offenders.
